Prenatal Care

Santa Ana Prenatal Care

Prenatal care can help you to care for yourself and your baby during pregnancy by:

Obtaining pre-natal care early in your pregnancy. If you know you are pregnant or believe that you may be pregnant, please schedule a visit with our clinic.
Obtaining pre-natal care on a regular basis. Your physician will schedule you for regular checkups throughout your pregnancy. It is important that you do not miss any appointments. Follow the advice of your physician. Prenatal care is important for your health and the health of your baby. Women who do not obtain prenatal care are more likely to deliver low birth weight babies than mothers who do obtain care.

When they see mothers on a regular basis, our physicians are trained to detect and treat health problems early. Early treatment can also help to prevent many problems. Our physicians can also speak to pregnant women about steps they can take to provide their unborn babies with a healthy start.

  • Eat a wide variety of healthy foods. Select whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Choose foods that are rich in calcium and low in saturated fat. It is also important to drink plenty of water.
  • Obtain important nutrients daily, particularly iron. Making certain you obtain enough iron can help to prevent anemia, a condition that is associated with low birth weight and pre-term birth. Including a variety of healthy foods in your diet can help to ensure that you and your baby receive the nutrients you both need.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables prior to eating in order to protect you and your unborn baby from serious food-borne illnesses, such as listeria and toxoplasmosis. Do not eat undercooked or uncooked fish or meats. Always clean, cook, handle, eat, and store food properly.
  • Do not eat fish that contains excessive amounts of mercury, including king mackerel, swordfish, tilefish, and shark.
  • Do not use drugs, drink, or smoke.
  • Only take prescribed medications.
  • Schedule visits with one of our doctors on a regular basis to discuss vitamin supplements and the appropriate time to schedule an ultrasound
